@oantolin@mathstodon.xyz I still have my Mathematical Logic and Set Theory textbook from almost 50 years ago - handwritten by the professor, W.W. Tait, xeroxed, and handed out chapter by chapter in the class. Cover? Certainly not! I hand-wrote my own cover/table of contents on the binders I put them into. Absolutely the best.

I think it's getting rapidly to "underground railway" and "hiding Jews in the attic" time in the US. (We don't actually have an attic, unfortunately.) So I just asked my wife if she's willing to shelter people in our house and she said yes. I'm putting it out there, if any trans person needs to get out of where they are fast, but can't get out of the US for whatever reasons, we will take you in until our house is full....

@tilton No argument on this. US hardware measurements and lumber measurements are crazy-pants. AFAICT the lumber thing is because in the 1800s, the whole US lumber industry was so dishonest in what they shipped that it just became the norm.

A thing I just discovered about the Mastodon web UI: You can edit the Alt text on a post you previously made, or add Alt text if you forgot to, by selecting Edit and then clicking the Alt Text widget after the edit form opens. This probably seemed obvious to whoever implemented it, but if it wasn't obvious to me as a sometime UI designer/implementer, then it isn't to everyone else either.

RE: https://wandering.shop/@CliftonR/116150219163967960 I think one possible solution to the United States' billionaire problem and the world's billionaire problem is this proposal (not original to me): When someone becomes a billionaire, there is a special ceremony - perhaps televised - where they are presented with a handsome trophy labeled "I won at capitalism!" Then the government takes 99.9% of their money away and gives it to some charity. If that billi...

@cstross@wandering.shop @Cadbury_Moose@wandering.shop @tienelle@mendeddrum.org We're entering the realm of complete absurdity now. If you cook measuring in grams and ml, you *do* measure by volume as well as weight! What exactly do you think ml is a unit of? It's not weight, except in the unique case of water at a specified temperature. As I said, I *regularly* cook with recipes that specify grams (pro bakers commonly use it in specifying bread proportions.) There's no real diff...
