🎧 YouTube link to the recording of NASA's first virtual event targeted for the Blind and Low Vision Community. This two hour presentation is about the SLS rocket tests for the rockets that power the Artimis space craft. There’s a never before heard excerpt of conversation between astronauts on the far side of the moon, audio described video of a launch, some hard science, and a great panel discussion about space, astronomy and accessibility. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG1RC_9_MAo

Mastodonians, I'm going to be trapped in Nanaimo BC between Oct. 7 and 13 visiting in-laws who have narrow lives, don't like each other, and watch a lot of TV. As a Blind person even just going out for a walk on my own is more stressful than relaxing. I'm looking for rescue plans, to connect with folk who might want to walk or hike, who know about any live music or music jams, or who I could claim to be acquainted with on social media and want to meet in person for a coffee. If the s...

Just another periodic squirt of gratitude for all you lovely alt text writers. As a Blind person you send me slices of the world I'd never otherwise have, insects, mushrooms, birds, cats, graffiti, landscapes, glimpses into your homes or your art, and not because you have to or are paid to, just cause you choose to. You are the resistance.

“Free As a Bird,” Good Lovelies cover. New strings and an absurdly profitable afternoon at my favourite subway station. Thanks generous Torontonians! Could have done well without the prayer card in my case though; drug pushing is probably illegal in the TTC. And yet, I was tickled by the single, wrapped hard candy. https://www.patreon.com/ChristineMalec/posts/free-as-bird-164595813?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

Okay so does anyone else insert cotton swabs deep into your ear and experience transitory but intense bliss? I know it's wrong, and please don't distress me with examples of how, just let me savor the bliss. p.s. My Dr. always says my ears look great on the inside.

“Subversives,” Lowest of the Low cover. This prolific, still frequently performing band has been a kind of soundtrack to my adulthood. Their songs have associations with friends no longer in my life, joyful, sing-along concerts in some of my favourite Toronto venues, and hundreds of instances of me covering their stuff in the subway. I don’t know why but this little song has become the first song I play every single time I busk, to the point where it has the value of ritual. If you don’t know th...

“Candle in the Wind,” Elton John cover. Even if heard too many times this song is still beautiful and poignant. Subway acoustics add to its gravitas. https://www.patreon.com/ChristineMalec/posts/candle-in-wind-163799649?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link

2-2 Here's the reverse side image. I found this in my guitar case after busking today at my favourite subway station. Can anyone varify if the AI description is correct, and can anyone give me some context? What is this worth locally? What could it buy? I have a photo of the other side, but I don't know how to post more than one photo at a time. Ask for it if it would help. AI says the other side has the number 5 in the middle, and the number 12 around the edge. Thanks!

I went to Toronto’s Pride Weekend Dike March for the first time today. I’d been to the Pride parade several times, and wasn’t as excited as I should have been, but my girl friend had never been to any Pride stuff, so I happily went with her, and I’m of course so glad! The peak moment for me was during the speeches. One organizer said, “No revenge, we don’t hate anyone.” The next talked about how to react to inevitable protesters, her advice, of course, was, “confront them with joy,” and she enco...

Still sending out reader gratitude to whoever recommended The Everlasting, by Alex E Harrow. I finished it and it's still living in my head, appropriately considering the title and how the story unfolds. The recommender said something like, "speculative fiction, beautifully written." As a trailor and spoiler hater this was a perfect way to intrigue me, and it was all true. The audio book with two readers was a special treat.

@morganth@social.tchncs.de As a Blind person moving through the world I sometimes get offers of help I don't need, but occasionally I accept it anyway because I can tell it will make the person feel good, and sometimes it can lead to sweet little conversations, and once it lead to holding hands with a peaceful old man at a bus stop who told me he hadn't been touched by anyone in 4 months.

Part of me wants to take alt text for granted but I'm too old for that. Most of me still marvels at all the lovely folk who write descriptions of macro photos, insects, adorable cats, landscapes, birds, galaxies, and on and on. As a Blind person this truly is access like we've never had before, and that I never imagined. Thanks beautiful people, you're part of the resistance.

Other than voting I’ve never involved myself in politics. Thursday Feb. 13 at 6:00 p.m. Eastern I’ll be joining a Zoom call run by Lead Now, to bring people together to help keep a rightwing agenda from seeping further into Canadian Federal Politics. Over 1000 people have signed up already, so I feel like there must be somewhere I can contribute. If you care about a humane future for Canada, consider joining us. https://you.leadnow.ca/events/how-we-fight-back-federal-election-campaign-launch

I was at a friend's place who has real TV. There was a commercial for maxi pads, and I heard the words, "gush protection." At last! the candor and frankness I've always wanted in menstrual product ads!

@OrdRadical In some food delivery aps you can send a note to the person accepting your order at the restaurant. I always want to, but never will send a message like, "You're really hot, when do you get off work?"

Every time I'm navigating in the subway in Toronto and I find tactile indicaters at the top of staircases, the edges of subway platforms, and making straight, easy to follow lines down a centre platform, I feel seen, heard, visible, like my safety and experience of navigating the world matters. #TTC

I’m hoping to reach anyone who can help me make connections with the Public Relations or Media departments at the Canadian Space Agency. My colleague Audio Describer JJ Hunt and I have an idea for a description-rich podcast modeled on our 135 episode strong Talk Description to Me franchise. I’d love to work with the Canadian Space Agency to do a series of podcasts exploring astronomy and space exploration from a Blindness perspective. This approach may seem niche, but you might be surprised how...

I'm sure this has been said a thousand times already, but following the Artimus coverage and hearing so many female voices was incredible. I've been following space stuff my whole life, and all the male voices for all those years just sounded the same, like sterile robots, no one I could relate to. All you capable, confident, competent, cheerful, brilliant, nice-sounding ladies: thank you!

Dulon Paradis Project Blog Post 11, Day 3 in Vienna. I wonder if there’s a language that has a pithy word or phrase for the experience of living out a lifelong dream. If I knew of one, it would be the title of this blog post. 🎧 Dulon Paradis Project, Audio Video Podcast, Paradis’s Composition Board. In this episode, Michelle and I talk about our experience at the Welt Museum in Vienna, where we got to experience the unique mechanism Paradis used for composing operas and other Classical pieces. I’ve written about it from my own perspective, but Michelle’s insights as a sighted musician and teacher of music theory are all their own. https://youtu.be/T06Vvq6e77g?is=tWs7WFldh-XFj7yM
