A friend is getting surgery so we made her recovery soups! One is a turkey kale bean soup with lemon and herbs, the other is a caramelized gochujang tomato soup with pomegranate molasses and blackstrap molasses for depth. Then I made myself a grilled cheese to go with the extra tomato soup 🥰 #cooking

Do any SF folks have a favorite pet transportation service? I have a potential adopter for Melody, but they're 60 miles south of here and neither my wife nor I drive. Worst case I can do a very long rideshare, but I'm hoping there are more specialized local services available. Caltrain is not an option due to her being dog reactive and a breed people are scared of.

With the tech job market the way it is, I know a lot of people who are interviewing right now, and some of the questions they get asked make me cranky. I wrote up a little rant about one category of them that's near and dear to me: http://dscoder.com/perfinterview.html

Hi folks; this is something I've been hesitant to post about since it's a very sensitive topic for me, but: I'm moving out of the US later this year, and unfortunately for legal reasons I'll be unable to take my dog with me. All the rehoming services I've contacted are unable to take her in, so, I've made a little page about adopting her. Please get in touch if you're interested: http://dscoder.com/melody/melody.html #dogsofmastodon

Refcount contention? Fighting over a cache line. Branch mispredict? Wouldn't have hurt much if resolving the comparison wasn't waiting on a load. You found an approach with better computational complexity? It probably has worse memory access patterns at realistic sizes, just use an array. Fancy ECS for your game? Just syntax sugar for AoS->SoA. Compacting garbage collection overhead? Sometimes *less than zero* because it improves memory layout. Cache rules everything arou...

You know, we could really learn something from AI. The AI companies increase the price of their product and *instantly* every single AI "worker" goes on permanent strike unless "employers" pay up.

Ludonarrative dissonance is so funny sometimes Pathfinder WotR: “You found an ancient demonic relic! Here’s 500 words of backstory about how it’s pure evil and has brought misfortune to literally every person who ever interacted with it” Also Pathfinder WotR: “anyway we made a sick cloak out of it for you, have fun!”

I wrote up a little flowchart here for how I think about "is it ok to do this work on the default Swift Concurrency thread pool?": https://forums.swift.org/t/is-concurrent-now-the-standard-tool-for-shifting-expensive-synchronous-work-off-the-main-actor/82976/17 When to make something asynchronous, when to make it parallel, and how parallel to make it are all inherently tricky in extremis, but the default behavior is the default for a reason, and is appropriate in the vast majo...

If you, like me, have ever been annoyed at the wastefulness of allocating a whole Array or Set just to store one object to pass to something: 1: change the thing you're passing it to from [Foo] to some Collection<Foo> or some RandomAccessCollection<Foo> 2: replace your Array with a CollectionOfOne No allocations, no refcounting, no indirection :) #swiftlang
