This is my favorite photo. I took it 14 years ago, at a Carnaval celebration in the Mission and published it here once, in black and white. Posted and done. End of story. Well not quite. A couple of weeks ago I went back to my Lightroom catalog, took another look, and decided the photo looked much better in color. So here it is. A moment frozen in time. I'm going to pin this for a while to remind myself to go out and take more street photos... because that is something that makes me rea...

We've been having a lot of unseasonably perfect weather these last few weeks. Blue skies, nice temperatures... all that boring crap instead of our usual cold and foggy days. Anyway... last night, around 11:30, Chris shouted that the fog was back so I grabbed my camera and joined him on the side deck. It was pretty dark out there so I didn't expect to get anything decent - not without a tripod and remote shutter - but I was surprised. The picture just needed a little noise reduction and...

Okay, how about a color photo for Monochrome Monday because I'm feeling frisky and because there's a quote from American photographer Walker Evans that has been rattling around in my brain for the last two days that I have to share. "Color tends to corrupt photography, and absolute color corrupts it absolutely. There are four simple words for the matter which must be whispered: Color photography is vulgar." (Note: Walker changed his mind later in life and his color photos ar...

Two corridors, two posters, chilly moods, delicious light. "I really don't care do U?" and "First we will make love, and then I will discard you." Taken at 450 Sutter and 1067 Folsom, respectively. #photography

It's Monday. And it's time to post a picture. So here's something different today: giant soap bubbles, flying through the air. Oooh. I'm off to catch up on the news. Love you all. Mean it. #photography

The Presidio Parade Ground. July 10th, 2026. 1:52 p.m. Food trucks are good but some things are better 👍 Alas, being gluten-free, I could not confirm this. But I can confirm the light that day was delicious... and it created a scene very much in the style of the Golden Gate National Park posters. Heh. My college alumni association has been pestering me for info for their reunion book. This is what I wrote: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER I'm retired so you're not getting a resumé. I don't want a job, not unless that ** in the White House creates another Great Recession, which could happen. U really want to know about me? I take lots of the camera pictures. With a camera. Sometimes they're amusing. I like those the best. Also, I still have weekly nightm...

For #ThrowbackThursday... Yesterday's picture of a container ship sailing through the Golden Gate channel reminded me of a picture I took way back in 2007. I just gotten my first DSLR, the Pentax K10D... and for a few months I started rushing around town like Jimmy Olsen, photographing every event, apartment fire, marathon, bar opening, and person dressed like a superhero at the Bay to Breakers race. Anyway, this is what I photographed on Sunday, February 4th, 2007, from Crissy Field. An...

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned I was going through my old friend Ian's journals and photos. While Ian died in1999, there are two people alive who still remember him (myself and a mutual friend in Florida). Anyway, I've saved a handful of Ian's photos from his journals. These 3 were labeled DIRIGIBLE LOS ANGELES IN PANAMA, Feb 27, 1928. I think Ian may have taken them - he was certainly there and all the other photos from that time are of Ian and his friends - but it is possi...

90 seconds of the 4th of July, taken from our side deck. Unlike previous years, there weren't as many local fireworks in the neighborhood this year... but nevertheless they kept banging away steadily from about 6:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Earlier in the day, Chris and I hikeded to the top of Bernal Hill (on the right side of this photo). I got dead but I'm better now 😁 #photography #LongExposure

For #ThrowbackThursday: Tuesday, December 8th, 1:43 p.m. I have been racking my brain for the last 6 months, trying to figure out where I took this picture. I remember what I was doing (shooting wide open with a brand new 50mm lens)... and I remember I was facing south. But where? Was this San Francisco, or Asheville, or somewhere in the wine country? I finally figured it out where when I came across another picture snapped on the same day, at approximately the same time. This was taken in Yer...
