They may differ in policy ideals, but at least our political leaders in Canada don’t hurl ugly insults at each other, and when needed can treat each other with respect. Especially outside the country. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/poilievre-new-york-carney-trump-9.7338906

Prime Minister Carney’s speech at the EU parliament. Canada may become the first EU Associate Member. This won’t be the same as being a member of the EU (pretty sure we’ll still need passports to travel back and forth and have our own currencies). “Canada and Europe are each strong. Europe and Canada are stronger together.” https://globalnews.ca/news/12063314/transcript-carney-speech-european-parliament/

I wonder how a big solar storm would affect space-based data centres? Some food for thought. Here's how they can affect satellites. https://sentinelmission.org/blog/how-do-solar-storms-affect-satellites/

How about abandoning FIFA altogether, and create a new international association that is some sort of charitable organization? It's profits from merch could go to supporting the sport, training facilities in different countries, and related activities. btw Did you know Rolex (the watch makers) is a charitable organization?Much of their profits apparently support a lot of charities. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/uefa-member-countries-agree-to-boycott-fifa-competitions-in-protest-9.729069...

Snail mail is coming back as an art form in clubs. But with most of us, we can help keep snail mail alive: getting a paper card in the mail for your birthday, party invites, Christmas etc. comes across as really special and more personal. https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/snail-mail-subscriptions-9.7272378

IMHO a silly premise in this article. While Canada is nuclear weapons capable, we’d never be able to do a clandestine program. I doubt we could keep a secret that big. Also we don’t really have much infrastructure to launch. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-remains-antinuke-road-to-bomb-getting-shorter-9.7283194

Just curious. What are US alcohol sales like in Alberta and Saskatchewan? Have they changed since before the 51st state nonsense? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/danielle-smith-american-alcohol-trump-tariffs-9.7284410

Over the years a US company purchased over 25% (3,500 acres) land land in B.C.s Dunster Community. "Unlike many other provinces, British Columbia has no restrictions on foreign ownership of agricultural land. But Dunster residents are asking the provincial government to change that. They want B.C. to restrict the foreign ownership of agricultural land — and redefine what it means to be a Canadian company in the province." https://thetyee.ca/News/2026/07/13/BC-Farming-Town-Fight-Bil...

Not happy with searches I'm doing for lateral filing cabinets. I'd like to compare products and prices from some Canadian furniture companies, but both Firefox and DDG just conjure up pages and pages of links to US owned companies -- mostly Wayfair, Amazon, Walmart, the evil Uline and BestBuy. The list just repeats the names of the same companies over and over again. I'd like to put a 'NOT (list)' in the search bar, but I don't think that works anymore. - end of rant -

Can people change their minds when being presented facts? Some studies say 'no', it can lead to people becoming firmer in their position. BUT! I've found it's not a hard and fast rule. Presenting facts can indeed trigger someone's ideas on a matter to change. We all got our ideas on things from somewhere. In my experience it largely depends on how the exchange takes place. And that in SOME cases, facts can lead to someone to at least start thinking of a new perscpective. I&#...

The US government is asking all/most of their employees to sign NDAs. Journalism associations, such as the National Association of Science Writers, say the move would muzzle sources needed for science (and other important) stories. This would affect journalists in other countries since we rely on the same sources. Comments, which can be posted by anyone, MUST be in by June 26, 2026. If you have something to say about this, there is a comment page. #NASW #journalism #FOI Details: https://www.nas...

I just discovered the joys of Ungava Gin. Its yellow colour comes from cloudberries. It’s the first gin I’ve tried (I haven’t tried very many) that I would describe as smooth. Adding cold tonic water almost seems like spoiling it!

Blinded by the LED lights on oncoming cars, motorcycles and bicycles? Transport #Canada has a survey you can fill out --whether you're a driver, cyclist, motorcyclist or pedestrian. Your chance to say what you think about these very bright, modern car headlights. - The survey didn't address the lights on bicycles, but yes, they can be blinding to car drivers too. Turns out there's a petition too. Link in next comment below. #cars #bicycles #headlights #safety https://tc...

If you're in search of new #SF to read, and exposure to new writers, consider signing up for the Story Bundle email list. Each month they offer a bundle of books for super low prices -- like $5. I know authors who agreed to have their books included in these bundles and say it helps get their names out there and with future sales of their books. This month offers a Space opera bundle as well as an #African SF bundle. #sciencefiction #SFmastodon https://www.storybundle.com/space

Well, this is fun. Can't log onto gmail while traveling overseas. 2-factor authentication means it sends a text code, which can't be received on my iPhone because the eSim is for just data. Gmail offered "try another way" which asked for a previous password, which I supplied. It then redirects me to a page that says now, scan the QR code using your cell phone. But the QR code doesn't hep because it's detecting a new number from the eSim, and the...
