If there isn’t any foreground, then is the background the subject? Or is the background the foreground? Betcha didn’t expect a philosophy pop quiz. #BlueskyArtShow #background #photography

The sunset is the background, but isn’t it the point of the image? Are the silhouetted trees the foreground or the negative space left by the subject? What’s the water? It’s in front, but it feels backgroundy to me. (Yes, "backgroundy" is a word.) #BlueskyArtShow #background #photography

Yeah, the signal light is in the midground, but it’s only there to make the background and foreground more interesting. #BlueskyArtShow #background #photography

These are a couple of shots I took back in 2014 of water main pipes waiting to be installed. I used two different cameras at two different focal lengths, wide and telephoto. I’ve returned to them several times, mostly because I just like them. (1) #BlueskyArtShow #openings #photography #classicmono

The fearsome pink thunder lizard that guards my brother’s front porch. Apparently, it was guarding the snow pile until that melted. I would have thought that snow would cause mass extinction, thunder lizards being ectothermic and all, but I have very little experience with prehistoric megafauna. Then again, if they had feathers and were endothermic, they could have been quite cozy. I believe this calls for More Science. #brontosaurus #apatosaurus #photography

Learning to shoot IR: This is a pond near my in-laws’ in Williamsburg Virginia. The sky was a bit overcast, and the IR makes vegetation look like it’s covered in snow. I’m getting comfortable enough with IR processing to start creating a look I like. #photography #classicmono #IR #infrared

Shot these at a small gulley near my house on a crisp (30ºF), clear late afternoon bike ride (note the shadow in shot 2). The first shot is processed with a hefty white balance shift and the second as monochrome. No, the sky wasn’t actually beige. #photography #classicmono #IR #infrared

Just a few shots this week: First hyacinth of spring in our front garden. #BlueskyArtShow #new #photography

Just a few shots this week: I always get a bit wistful when my mom’s crocuses bloom. They knew it was spring, even if the snow didn’t. #BlueskyArtShow #new #photography

Just a few shots this week: Some ridiculously cute goslings along the Erie Canal towpath in 2016. I was riding myself out of a major depression, and they were always good medicine. #BlueskyArtShow #new #photography

Things that look like stone but aren’t . . . The hellbender is the largest salamander in North America. It hides under rocks in streams, protected by its remarkable camouflage. It’s a game of spot the salamander whenever I (try to) see them at #SenecaParkZoo. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography

Things that look like stone but aren’t . . . Jiwe is a southern white rhino at #SenecaParkZoo. He arrived in 2019 as a one ton toddler—if you’ve never seen a rhino with the zoomies, you haven’t lived. ❤️😏 Jiwe loves to troll for butt scratches from his keepers. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography

Red brick front steps of our house. Not stone, strictly speaking, but close enough for jazz. Posting a bit early because I’ll be traveling tomorrow. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography #brick

There is a small historic cemetery near my house that used to look out over the Erie Canal (now the interchange of Interstate 490 and 590). On one late afternoon photo expedition 16 years ago, the setting sun lit one gravestone so that it glowed. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography #classicmono

A bit of a study in contrast: a light and airy butterfly on a big old toe stubber of a rock. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography

In the 19th century, cemeteries functioned also as parks, and the most celebrated designer of parks was Frederick Law Olmsted. #MountHopeCemetery in Rochester NY is an #Olmsted classic. From a photo walk in 2014. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography #cemetery #CelticCross

Until recently, I thought these were the same statue. Turns out one is in #MountHopeCemetery and the other in #BrightonCemetery, both in #RochesterNY. My guess is that they were both cast from the same (popular) mold. #Olmsted #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography #cemetery

A few late entries now that we’ve reached our destination: I’ve posted a different version of this shot that emphasized the wild grass. This treatment is all about the stone. A nice high-contrast photo for @jaycee-visionlogic.eurosky.social #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography #Ireland

Another alternate take: From Balm of Gilead Brook in the #Adirondacks. I find that freezing the water at 1/250th highlights its movement captured in time, where six seconds turns it into a smooth silk highlighting the hardness of the rocks. #BlueskyArtShow #stone #photography
