“I tell the students I meet: imagine you’re an Olympic athlete. You set out to sprint the 3km across London, from Clapham to Balham. You know if you take the bus, it will be faster. But you also know that the point was never being in Clapham or Balham; they’re very similar: they both have a nice Pizza Express. It was the strength you built, the speed and knowledge of your body that you gained. A student’s essay on Macbeth has no value as a product.” https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interact...

Still more than USD$1 trillion in the hole. It’s like watching an addict unable to leave the craps table.

That's why they need you to believe that Al is a big deal without them ever having to prove why outside of capital expenditures. They want you to assume that all this money can't be wrong”

If only I’d known I could just write “GAofB”, my editing career might have looked different. More from David Sedaris #bookstodon

@zoy@merveilles.town I agree. Also, AI isn’t making people’s writing better. It’s making it so bland and generic as to be completely unreadable.

Still running iOS 18. Do I absolutely have to update to iOS 26 eventually or can I just stay here?

Reading about Oswald Mosley and pondering the difference between his very stereotypically macho (‘swashbuckling’, apparently) mass appeal vs Trump, who when you think about it is actually not very conventionally masculine at all. He’s all soft and big bottomed and small handed and milkweed voiced.

The internet is a mess. I couldn’t remember whether dehumidifier water is non-potable because it’s distilled (thus no electrolytes) or stagnant (bacteria) or both, and here is a ‘resource’ I found

@aj @taylorlorenz Yes absolutely. This plus the portability aspect if your chosen platform goes evil!

Why is it that it’s only on here that people are talking openly about how bad most LLM output is? People might joke about its ‘quirks’ and hallucinations, but otherwise it seems to be universally accepted that AI is Very Important. At the consumer level it’s making products worse. Google search is worse (and that was a high bar. It had already been pretty thoroughly bastardised). Autocorrect is worse. All the small interactions we have with tech are worse and no one is talking about it.

@dangillmor oop, there it is. This was the final nudge I needed. Account and app deleted (not that I ever used it, because I couldn’t ever really submit to the format).
