Sometimes Mastodon feels like a connection, some days it just makes you feel more isolated. I guess it evens out over all πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Three good things today: 1: Somehow managed to walk 1.5 miles, almost entirely within a 5m x 5m square of dad's garden. 2: Within spitting distance of finishing the grand fruit bush netting frame. 3: Worked out that dad's rivet gun is user-serviceable, and fixed it, all by myself. Went from 20 squeezes to 2 squeezes per rivet! #3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings

July 2005 I slept* through Hurricane Dennis in New Orleans, just weeks before Katrina. How different it would have been, if we had taken our vacation just a little later. I still have shivers, thinking how quickly things got brutally violent. *I have a habit of doing this - I walked the dog around the park the day after the 1987 UK hurricane, amazed at all the toppled and split trees.

Shared a table at lunch with a very interesting French gentleman who is in Edinburgh for the week looking for Fringe acts who would like to perform at a big festival in Avignon. I flipping love this place.

In other news from lunchtime, my bottle of "lemon iced tea" had a peculiar flavour. Further investigation revealed a tiny English label that says Sour Plum Soup, made with sour plums, dried tangerine peel, licorice, and salt. Best before May 6th 2026. Well that's alright then, I thought there was something wrong with it!

#ScribesAndMakers 29 Do you know what you wanted to be at 11? I wanted to be an inventor. There were a whole lot fewer cogs and pistons involved than I expected, but in many ways, that's what I was.

I have a franchise idea... a shop that sells only bulk items by weight into your own reusable containers. Shampoo, slices of soap off of a bar, basically anything shelf-stable that usually comes in single-use plastic.

I decided to leave the window open tonight, for that cool gentle breeze. 1:30am (an hour ago) I finally got up and closed the window, the storm was scraping the blinds against the wall. Still sounds very windy out there. Anyway, what are you doing?

#ScribesAndMakers 7 May: When did you think of the idea for your current project? Do you remember how it came about? My current project is to create a simulation of an imaginary 8-bit home computer from the early 1980s. I think the seeds of the idea came to me 25 years ago - I always wanted to try out some processor architecture ideas. I'm starting off with a simulated 6502, but once I have the rest of the development system and simulated hardware ready, I'm going to do some processor...

@ShredderLivesOn this will be my first Scottish Parliament vote (and only my second vote this century - I've been away). I have no idea what to expect when I go to the polling station - what does the ballot look like? Is it essentially two identical lists?

I would like to practice longer walks, around ten miles, in preparation for a possible walking holiday next year. Does anyone familiar with the Fife region know of any good walks that don't involve walking along roads without a footpath? I don't drive, so accessibility by train or bus is essential. Any suggestions gratefully received! #Fife #Scotland #walking

In our group chat my son just posted "have you ever seen an old man try to find the right remote?" I'm familiar with the concept...

I gave up on the Jodie Whittaker Doctor episodes at the exact same point as when they first aired. And I promise I really tried this time. I always thought it was the awful Chibnalled stories, but I have to be honest. I can't stand the fake cheerful whining. Or the striding around holding the sonic screwdriver out like a tour guide rallying a group of tourists with a little flag.

Alright, getting up and heading into Edinburgh for the Believe In Scotland March. I feel I should get a saltire scarf. I wonder if I can get one locally rather than in the tourist shops? Mrs Kedge is going to a No Kings rally today. Living in different countries, still strangely coordinated πŸ˜„

#PennedPossibilities 962 If there was ever going to be a film or a series based upon your WIP, what do you imagine the soundtrack would be like? What genre? Well, for the 1920's stuff, 1970's progressive rock instrumentals of course.

Bus drivers get mad if you get on before passengers get off, despite there being no way for you to see them slowly getting to their feet at the back of the bus. There again, they'd get mad if you waited for passengers to get off, and none were going to do so, so it evens out. Bus drivers do a wonderful job in terrible conditions, I won't hear a word said against them. But sometimes...

Do you ever put off going back to sleep because you had that dream again where you were just about to crawl through that space that is obviously too small, and there's NFW you want to go back into the same dream? And why the flying photon was I wearing a tuxedo? I've never worn a tuxedo.

I strongly suspect that the current generation of engineers - of all types - have so many workplace distractions and interruptions that they rarely if ever find themselves "in the zone". That transcendental space where the entirety of the design is clear in your mind, the next three steps forward are queued up waiting to be typed in, another crystalizing as soon as the first is instantiated, and before you know it hours have passed and you have made (regular) days of progress....

@cstross@wandering.shop hmm, that seems to be fading fast. I know so many people who never read a book, or who have a very limited vocabulary. I think mass literacy peaked perhaps twenty or thirty years ago.

@jacqui76@mastodon.ie Mahmood says that making life harder for asylum seekers will "reduce racism". Absolute tosh, racists will be emboldened by the institutionalised dehumanisation of minorities. I'm recently returned to the UK after more than two decades away. I know the psychological toll of being "other" - and I'm not in a targeted demographic. There is no need to turn up the heat further, this is just performative cruelty. I don't feel represented by West...
