Huh.
Where I lived in Minnesota, the landowners paid about 95% of the road costs within the city, less for county and state. There was a bit in grants, and a bit from the river port (Cargill, so you can guess how much less it was than actual cost to the city.)
Different states, different methods of subsidizing the oil industry.

@Amgine@mamot.fr I think we could actually lower the cost of driving (not to mention living) if we simply made drivers pay for what they get and get what they pay for. Real #trafficEngineering, if there is such a government-regulated technical profession. Narrower streets cost less money, shaded asphalt bikeway and a narrow paver-covered street will both last much longer than a 5-lane stroad, besides costing less to build and maintain.
