For me personally, the *length* of my unreviewed notification list doesn't change how I feel about it (since I long ago gave up on reading everything and switched to "read what looks interesting", mark everything else as read), but it isn't easy to tell from outside a project whether another maintainer feels the same way I do, or if they're in the situation you describe, where every addition to the pile feels like a new unmet obligation.
