I think the church included sloth as a sin so the peasants would keep grinding and not be complacent to live off of their garden and enjoy their little lives.
That grind mentality.

Actually, we work harder than medieval peasants and the church specifically condemned working on Sundays. Also the seven deadly sins predate Christianity.
