KNOWLEDGE ABOUT TECH COMES FROM A VERY SMALL STEP AND THAT IS CURIOSITY
I had a friend and we talked much about computer. One day, I tried to impress him by sending him a desktop screenshot of an alternative operating system. I asked him what did he think about it. He was unresponsive, and said that he could not make anything about it and asked if he were to compare it with anything. Several days later, he shared an AI-generated picture from ChatGPT on his social media, a trend at that time, to transform selfie into 80s style, and he complained to the chatbot that the generated face in the picture didn't look like him at all. I replied his post by telling him that ChatGPT do not allow using actual user face when generating a picture, and that different AI chatbots have different policy in processing a human photo. Again, he was unresponsive when I told him about that.
Here is the thing: I realized that my friend has no interest in tech. If he was, he would be asking: "What is that alternative operating system?", "Who develops that operating system?", "How did the developers create an operating system?" And, about the AI chatbot trend, he would be replying to me: "Why do ChatGPT do not allow using actual user face when generating a picture?", "Why do different AI chatbots or LLMs have different policy in processing a human photo?"
Unresponsiveness about how tech works is a red flag when someone says they are interested to work in tech, or even if they had previously said they worked in tech. Someone may have no experience in tech work, but then curiosity drives the mind: questions that linger the thought when issues appear in their PCs, such as sound issues when a laptop does not play sounds during a YouTube video playback. The user needs a capacity to think: "What cause this? Is this issue related to the web browser? Is it related to the hardware I am using? Or have I installed sound driver properly?"
Everything starts with curiosity. Someone may have no knowledge in tech, no experience in working with tech, but from a small step by having curiosity in technology, serves as a gateway to look up about it online and learn something new. The person may be interested more and look up online communities that talk about tech, subscribing tech online magazines, and probably learn how to code and contribute something new. Even if they don't, being aware about tech and curious about it is enough to seek knowledge in tech.
