🇳🇪 Mutinous soldiers launched an attack on Diori Hamani International Airport and the presidential palace in Niamey in the early hours of Saturday, with heavy gunfire and explosions reported across the capital.
Niger’s Defense Ministry said loyalist forces regained control of the presidential area, while mutineers remained inside the airport.
The attack marks the most serious internal security challenge yet to Niger’s military junta, which seized power in the 2023 coup.
The situation remains fluid as government forces work to secure the capital and contain the mutiny.
