In my opinion, these two beliefs are simultaneously valid: 1. Public funding for science is critically important for the well being of society 2. Governmentally funded institutions of science primarily serve the interests of capital at the expense of society as a whole. There are very different reactions among leftists when governments defund science. I think it is reasonable to be upset when science is defunded and it is reasonable to think it is good when certain institutions of science are defunded. The challenge for anarchists is to help people understand that public funding is not the same as government funding; that science is always political because knowledge is a source of power and therefore power distribution depends on who has access to what kind of knowledge; that most scientific institutions in the world are doing a poor job of implementing scientific methodologies and principles; and that science could be so much more insightful, helpful, and fulfilling in the absence of governments and capitalism.
