It’s wild that Windows 11 REMOVED THE ABILITY TO DECLINE UPDATES. That is now pro or enterprise tier only. #microsoft also deprecated/abandoned the add-in tool (wushowhide) to block ones you don’t want. And I found all this out because windows update would not let me opt out of putting #lg spyware on my computer. Congrats, MS and LG, you finally motivated me to put #linuxmint on my main gaming rig. I mean, I was going to have to when age verification kicked in anyway but I’ll be damned if companies I bought shit from get the right to screenshot and enhance my marketing profile with everything I display on their monitors. Though, tbf, there’s part of me that wants to set up some LG monitors and Roku boxes that look like they are in the Rayburn building (where US House reps have offices) and just make them look like everyone in that building is watching the most vile porn imaginable constantly. So they can start getting all those useful and beneficial tailored ads.

  • @Negahyphen@infosec.exchange Moving to Linux Mint is the right move overall, but just for fun, If you're powershell saavy you can have some (emphasis on "Some") more granular control if you check for/install updates via the pswindowsupdate module. Some examples: #check for updates (and don't install them): get-windowsupdate #Install updates (it will prompt for consent for each entry, allowing one to skip): get-windowsupdate -download -install #If you want to check for updates from Microsoft Update: Get-WindowsUpdate -MicrosoftUpdate -Verbose Doing this along with a combination of disabling wuauserv can maybe ease the pain, but I agree overall that MS has made this entire process unacceptable and stupid. You made the right move by just exiting the OS.
