I think it's a good idea to take a year or so to slowly make the switch over to a diferent routine.
If he's happpy then why not continue working but if not then maybe he needs help slowing down.

@TrueNorthSpice@mastodon.world In a professors case there's simply the problem of being so far removed from the students it's hard to teach them. My partner has had to tell him that today's youth won't understand references from the 90s let alone the 80s. :)
