I didn't read "Why can't you combine .tar.gz files with cat?" because that's wrong -- you can.
They just stop being tar files, eh?!

@jpmens@mastodon.social Hmm tar -czf 1.tar.gz file1 tar -czf 2.tar.gz file2 cat 1.tar.gz 2.tar.gz > 1+2.tar.gz tar --ignore-zeros -tzf 1+2.tar.gz file1 file2 (with GNU tar or bsdtar/libarchive)
