Historians would say they were very good friends. They never married, instead choosing to live together in their comfortable cottage on the hill between the sleepy town and the enchanted forest. They were known to be keen cyclists, and loved going on adventures together - and sometimes, just having a picnic on the violet-studded hillside by their home. Their letters to each other were unusually romantic, and sometimes quite passionately so, even for such close friends. What a wonderful life.
