@mycrowgirl@flipping.rocks that so cute. Their nails? Look like little shards of glass. Is it really that transparent? I saw some previous videos where they were hiding under a crab or lobster. Why do they hide like that? Does it mimic a behavior in the wild?

@fullywoolly@mastodon.social their nails are very much like those of a kitten! So yes, kind of a translucent white on this species. The their thumb nails, so the ones at the top of their wings, even have to be trimmed in captivity if they don’t wear them down enough climbing. Because otherwise they curve too much causing them to snag on things. Which is very familiar to people who have cats or dogs! That’s only really an issue for bats in longer term rehabilitative care for mobility issues though ☺️ Bonus information: the long white hairs on their toes have only recently been discovered to glow under (long-wave) uv light. The video you saw of them flapping under their lobster stuffy is a good, if silly, example of roosting behaviour for crevice bats. Crevice bats are the species that like to roost in caves and tight crevices. These pups are just a bit silly because normally they would do this vertically, and not on the ground. Because they’ve been in care since their very earliest days, they feel safe in their enclosure to do things they would be too afraid of in a natural setting. But those “stay safe” insticts do kick in once they are released to the wild.
