The verb ‘to wait’ comes from Old French, but that language in turn borrowed it from the ancestor of Dutch ‘wachten’.
These words have a big family. It includes ‘to wake’, ‘woke’, ‘to watch’, and, via Latin, ‘vigilant’, ‘vigour’, ‘vegetation’, and ‘vegetable’.
