@rl_dane@polymaths.social @oxy@social.bsdlab.au I'm writing about the launch of the first Macintosh Portable in 1989 for my next newsletter. Sculley tried to sell it as a computer for the people--at a price tag of $5,795 (floppy disk only, the hard drive would add another $700)!

@computerchronicles@mastodon.social @rl_dane@polymaths.social when you consider the Compaq Luggable was around $3500 in 1983-ish thats not great pricing for the time

@computerchronicles@mastodon.social @oxy@social.bsdlab.au I remember the Luggable! I used to play around with it at the UT Austin "Microcentre" (no relation to the electronics chain store with a similar name). It played a mean game of Shufflepuck Café! 😅 "Kids today" don't know how close to e-ink early Active Matrix monochrome LCDs were. Pretty darn crisp, if the lighting was good. Fortunately, I never once had to (or even tried) to lift that thing. Lead acid battery?!?! 😂
