Why isn't this more in news?
Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had its highest weekly death toll last week, with more than 300 new deaths.
The outbreak is now the fastest-growing in history, with 7x more deaths than the 2014-2016 West African outbreak in its first three months. The 2014-2016 outbreak ended with >11,000 deaths, by far the most ever, and incl many infections in Europe and the U.S. (from aid workers). This current outbreak is on track to shatter that number of deaths.
Why so fast-growing?
Why still so out of control?
For one, Trump's gutting of USAID and withdrawal from the WHO drastically cut funding and personnel for Ebola and Public Health monitoring, esp in Africa. Consequently, news of the outbreak didn't even come out until weeks after it had already exploded and spread.
And unlike the 2014-2016 strain, for which we now have a vaccine, there is no vaccine for the current Bundibugyo strain.
