But, it sounds like a gesture taken as an appeal to the pride of the soldiers.
While killing the messenger, could be twisted by an eternal moralizer into an example of giving into ones emotions.
Killing the messenger could also be see as a judgement of the enemy, that no quarter should be given, and that there is no more room under heaven for your foe.
