Wow, the Anthropic authors settlement sounds like a shitshow. Not only it is a pitiful payout for contemptuous theft of work that has done nothing to solve the issue. Not only are fake claimants trying to grab the authors’ shares outright (somehow necessitating the *author* to disprove the claim rather than the scammer to prove it) But supposedly legitimate agents are claiming 25% of the payout amount for no work , and never mind it’s a legal settlement, not a consensual rights-sale. What a dreadful betrayal of trust from a bunch of parasites. #WritingCommunity

I never had a hope in the settlement, since — silly me! — I followed Australian copyright law which says the moment a work exists it’s automatically protected with no need to be registered, so why would I have bothered with a foreign country’s copyright office? Especially when writing advice sites also said don’t worry about it unless and until you need to launch legal action against infringement…because who knew they’d decide on a retrospective cut-off date for registration, right? A surprising number still had this advice up as this shitshow was going down.
