@prolrage@todon.nl I always learned at school in France that West Germany "freed" East Germany. Then I studied at the University in Dresden and there I learned that West Germany tried to erase East German culture, their anthem for instance just disappeared. Despite the east regime being very authoritarian, they were far more advanced than the west for woman and reproductive rights. A lot of people lost their jobs after the reunification and don't feel like the so-called "reunification" was an improvement, quite the contrary. I'm not saying that East Germany was a great country but capitalist Germany certainly isn't. Also it always strikes me that the german communist party is forbidden since 1956 whereas the NPD (a litteral neo nazi party) still exists legally.

@manonpatate@corneill.es @prolrage@todon.nl The anthem wasn't erased, East Germayn adopted the existing West German anthem. The reason for this is: It was never a unification on a level playing field, but East Germany decided to accede to the existing West German Federal Republic of Germany. In my view, it's one of the major faults of the re-union: We didn't form a new, unified nation, but one nation was merged into the other.
