it is now the next day, and my etchant became saturated with copper overnight (there's leftover bits of the wire i fed it) but still smells strongly of HCl, which i think means it ran out of oxygen
running bubbles through it to see if that helps

@emily@fedi.uni.horse back when i home etched pcbs i actually used HCl:H2O2 and didn't ever get to the saturated copper chloride state
