How well you install it and look after it makes a difference, as does design and usage. If you fix-on-fail rather than service and maintain, stuff is going to break. I suspect it's like many things where those having problems are more visible than others. I have run all kinds of Shimano shifters (and the occasional SRAM ones) for decades without the issue @jdarais@sfba.social describes, including in very muddy cyclo-cross conditions. #BikeNite
