In a parallel universe, English might've had *thede instead of 'people', which is a borrowing from Old French 'pueple'.
However, it could just as easily have been superseded by 'folk', which is what happened in Dutch with 'volk' and in German with 'Volk'.
Both languages did away with 'diet':
