The average person can’t afford to defend themselves in court.

  • A [local ACLU affiliate](https://www.aclu.org/affiliates ) may be able to assist with finding representation. The [First Amendment Coalition legal hotline](https://firstamendmentcoalition.org/legal-hotline/) is another option. There's also the [American Bar Association lawyer referral directory](https://www.americanbar.org/groups/lawyer_referral/resources/lawyer-referral-directory/) (or just put "[your state] bar association" into your search engine of choice and browse for its lawyer-finding resources). Many places offer pro bono representation for those who cannot afford to defend themselves. Doesn't mean it's easy or that it isn't a pain in the ass to have to go through the process but the alternative is letting the bastards win and that's unacceptable to vertebrates.
