I was wondering what the "gres" in "Postgres" could mean.
Wikipedia says: PostgreSQL started as “Post-Ingres”, after its predecessor, “Ingres”, short for “interactive graphics retrieval system”. So I guess it means that.
Also interesting: The original code, like that from other projects at Berkeley, was available at minimal cost under a permissive license. Ingres spawned a number of commercial database applications, including Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, NonStop SQL and a number of others.
