Nine feet up in the tallgrass, leaves turned north and south to duck the midday sun. That's how it got the name — and how people once took a bearing on open ground with nothing else to sight on. Silphium laciniatum. Blooming right now through September. #BloomScrolling #GardensOfMastodon #wildflowerhour #NativePlants #Prairie #Gardening #Herbalism #Druid #Folklore #Nature #Botany #Solarpunk 1/3

  • Prairie is among the most destroyed habitats on this continent, and this is one of its markers. Everything you can see of it is built to be burned off. The taproot goes fifteen feet down into ground nobody has broken since before there was a state there. Some live close to a century. What's the one you'd put in the ground knowing you won't see it finished? #BloomScrolling #GardensOfMastodon #wildflowerhour #NativePlants #Prairie #Gardening #Herbalism #Druid #Folklore #Botany #Solarpunk 2/3
