@sesivany@social.vivaldi.net Yep; definitely not realistic. We’ve been discussing disallowing vanity prefix generation on the #montreal mesh, too. This is interesting data. (We also recommend 3-byte, but the tyranny of the default is real indeed.)
I like that closest-match strategy. It’s imperfect but better than this for sure.

@sean@scoat.es BTW why did the Canadian MC community pick 3B? I was wondering about it when saw it in the list of presets. The probability of collisions with 2B is very small and 3B eats into the payload quite a lot. I suppose that when the mesh in Canada becomes dense enough messages may accumulate a lot of nodes travelling across the country. Or a nation-wide mesh isn't realistic and the ambition is to build smaller meshes? We're a small country, we're building a nation-wide mesh, but for an area that is only 500x300km, a completely different scale. :)
