My go-to mastering chain in Reaper
1. JS: 4-band EQ, general tonal cleanup/shaping, band settings vary per mix (this is the "listen and fix problems" stage, not a fixed recipe).
2. ReaXcomp, starting from the "mastering 3-band" preset, with overall gain set to -1 dB. Often it doesn't need any further adjustment, since the preset already balances the compression across the mix on its own. When it does need help, I nudge individual band thresholds or ratios depending on where the mix is actually asking for it (bass too loose, vocals poking out, etc).
3. kClip (zero-latency soft clipper), input and output gain both at -1 dB, with the "soften" knob raised to roughly 25% when the material needs it to round off the clipping instead of sounding harsh.
4. Render.
Typical result: about -1 dB of headroom left on top, integrated loudness landing around -6 to -7 LUFS on most material, dropping to around -10 LUFS on quieter/lo-fi stuff. Louder, denser genres (drill, etc.) need less pushing since they're already loud to begin with.
Note: these settings are tuned to my own material and workflow, not a universal formula. Different source material will likely need different numbers, so treat this as a starting point to adjust from, not a preset to copy exactly.
