if I expand the walls by not a multiple of the cell size then I can just check each line segment for whether it's in the wrong place and if it's not discard it and if it is put it in the right place

ok slight problem it breaks on this wall configuration X XXXXXXXXXXXXX with one of the perpendicular walls being exactly one unit long
