I've been thinking about the things that motivate me to create theatre no matter what (like a crazy person), and remembering when it became incredibly apparent to me how deeply sexist the theatre is when it came time for me to audition for grad schools. The overwhelming majority at the auditions were women. But most grad schools admitted people at a 2 to 1 ratio of men to women "in order to reflect the opportunities in the real world of theatre." They said this openly in their literature, (1)

    and I remember immediately thinking, "But...if we don't train more women, how will those real world opportunities ever stop favoring men?" Every man from my school who went to grad school auditions got multiple callbacks. The women were lucky to get one. And to get one, they had to fit a theatre archetype. I did this monologue from El Cid. In it, Chimene is seeking vengeance for her father's death, while trying (and failing) to be respectful to the king, and to fight through horror and sorrow:
