The Oscar Zero Missile Alert Facility, part of the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile Site, preserves the vintage aesthetic of cold war-era nuclear launch control centers. #PastTimes via Brian Roemmele from Twitter

  • @johnmacintosh@swiss.social There is a place near me, the Hack Green Nuclear Bunker, which has a similar aesthetic. This was one of a network of underground British regional government bases, constructed in extreme secrecy and intended to provide continuity of government and (somehow) provide a base for regional emergency support in the event of a nuclear attack on the UK. Given that these bunkers were located in extremely rural areas, and by the late 1960s ICBM technology had put the country in the range of 10 minutes between launch from East Germany and air detonation over the UK, it seems unlikely anyone would ever have made it to them in time.
