(Speaking hypothetically) If KDE e.V. covers someone's Akademy trip, I think that's financial support. Spent money isn't fungible for general use, it's earmarked for Akademy-related use (Hypothetically, maybe it's different in reality). I see no difference between that and free hardware donations.
