Here's the thing about social media folks: Post on your own feed = people who follow you and presumably want to know your thoughts will see it. Reply to someone else's post = you are demanding attention from someone else, so you'd be well advised to check whether you are telling them something they likely already know. Wanna share a thought based on what someone else said? Bare minimum, respect their expertise and acknowledge their contribution.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social I disagree in part. I think that you're trying to make two points that probably require separate posts. On the one hand, I understand what you're saying about respect for the other person and doing even a basic bit of fact-checking before you wade in with something to say. Or, checking whether the person speaking is qualified. I don't fault that side of things because I've seen the sorts of comments your posts attract and there are a lot of uninformed replies. So I agree The other thing is that you seem to be throwing up a sort of is/ought problem. You're defining terms for what social media ought to be, including a dichotomy that treats threads differently whether you started it or something else. Sure, maybe there ought to be consideration of someone's time and maybe even a degree of respect for authority (as in, on a topic) but in the real world this isn't how social media works. If you really want to defend a theory of social media, then I think it's best to deal with it as a separate topic. And I don't think you'll succeed in making anyone agree with you on that side of things. edited to add: I mean, get a bunch of people together and get them to come up with a theory of social media and you'll never come up with a consensus view.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social Sorry I disagree. Sure, be polite and kind is good but don't give the impression that it is somehow taboo to reply to someone. That's a blog with comments disabled. Are you an academic by any chance? Living in some privileged remote ivory tower?
