A good 35+ years ago I was in a giant inter-school choir that sang in the Town Hall and I still remember many of the songs word for word and note for note (in some cases both melody and descant). One of them in particular, "The Mermaid", is one I got in the habit of singing to myself when particularly upset, in order to ward off tears.
YouTube doesn't have the exact version we sang, but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5iO0lddP9Y by the King's Singers comes closest -- we only sang the first two verses plus the last one, and in that last verse our second line was "[sailing free] / when the bosun said to the captain, 'Sir, we have to put to sea.'" (This makes no sense if they're already sailing free in the middle of the Atlantic but there it was!)
