Ruff 0.16.0 - Astral's fast Python linter - came out a few days ago and increased the number of default-enabled rules from 59 to 413, which highlighted all sorts of problems across my projects (1618 in sqlite-utils alone) https://simonwillison.net/2026/Jul/25/ruff/

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net are they mostly style problems ? Or genuine things to take note of for future versions of Python?

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net python has become the most user hostile environment over the years. What‘s causing this? Why are people adding new „norms“ think this is a good idea?

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net why would Astral suddenly want to create huge amounts of busy work for maintainers and their LLMs? 😉

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net I made a minimal pylint file based on the old "use minimal checkers" setting from VS Code, and put it on gist a while back. I should convert it to ruff and share that as well. Though I think I have become less minimalist when it comes to linting over the years.
