@TheQuinbox@dragonscave.space I wonder why YouTube hasn't implemented Google's own Widevine DRM (plus FairPlay for Apple)? Not that I think they should, but it would mostly be game over for downloaders at that point.

@jscholes@dragonscave.space @TheQuinbox@dragonscave.space Backwards compatibility. It's all free anyway, so they're not losing money to piracy, not as much as mainstream movie studios at least. What they.d lose from non-widewine users wouldn't offset the gain in ad revenue from people nerdy enough to use yt-dlp.
