@virtuous_sloth@cosocial.ca A mechanism for preventing low-priced sales in one region being imported and resold is. Region coding was a simple way of doing this. Few enough people had region-free players (I did, there was a magic combination you could press on the controller that set it to region 0) that no one bothered importing cheap wrong-region DVDs at scale.
