@cmdrmoto@hachyderm.io They're going to set up a system where, instead of printing ghost guns, people will be printing ghost printers.

@awilbert@mastodon.social This has been the stupidest thing I've come across in a while and I do come across stupid stuff daily. This is one of those cases, where someone with absolutely no basic logic or critical thinking abilities tries to come up with a silver bullet solution to a problem where the genie has already out the bottle. I can think of so many ways to trivially circumvent this law and its limitations that it literally hurts. While an average innocent consumer is obviously hurt by all the locking up and limiting this will obviously cause, an actual criminal will just go "huh, I better drive to the next state and bring myself an unlimited one". Or just reflash the thing with unlimited software, that will be guaranteed to surface very soon after. I also hope they also include all the metal work tools in this limitation so no one can produce any metal guns out of raw materials.

@awilbert@mastodon.social Or just leave the market. Neither WA nor NY are big enough markets to go to that far and redesign your whole ecosystem. The US market is aiming for a downwards trend anyway since actual people have less and less disposable income, better focus on enormous markets such as China, India and Europe.

@awilbert@mastodon.social Oh, and lest you hope that legislators are out of touch and the technology impossible in practice, maybe give this a watch. Bambulabs and their proprietary slicer ecosystem still feel like a vague, wonky source of nerd gripes? No. Their strategy is an existential threat to hobbyists. https://youtu.be/s6Iwoq2faMk

@awilbert@mastodon.social I'd seen mention they were thinking of doing this. Even just on a technical level it seems like a fools errand, let alone the privacy and lock-in implications.
