Welcome to #BikeNite on Friday, September 25th. Thanks for joining our chat. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility. Our intro: Q1a. Where are you posting from today? and @kimu@wandering.shop asks, after being hospitalized by a driver while walking in a crosswalk 🤕 Q1b. Would it be weird if I print out a copy of a photo of my bike (maybe with me in the photo too?) and take it to my 2nd surgery? And maybe to every one of my follow up PT/OT/office appointments? I already put “getting back on my bike as soon as possible” on my care goals but I don’t think anyone actually reads those. Like, is it going to be weird if I hold it up when the surgeon does the pre-surgery check in? #BikeNiteQ #BikeTooter @bikenite@fedigroups.social

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a - I am posting from the damp, chilly #VancouverIsland where it feels like baked squash weather, although the sun just peaked out for the first time today. A1b - Not in the slightest bit weird - Your care, your rules. A picture is a good way to engage your care providers, to start the conversation about **your** goals. You may not get 100% agreement, but you can certainly clarify your priorities.

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social #BikeNite A1: I'm posting from home in Rochester Minnesota. Posting a photo of you and your bike as motivation for healing and recovery is a great idea. One caveat is to let your body heal sufficiently before pushing hard. I once pushed too hard and too quickly to get back on my bike after surgery. As a result I had a relapse and further surgery was required to correct. The second time I was more patient and the results were much better.

  • @ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.social A1a. Northern Virginia as usual. A1b. Generally speaking, for a pre-surgery check-in, I'd focus on making sure you write "this side" and "not this side" with a Sharpie in the appropriate places. But, sure, keep bringing up the bike! When I broke my ankle a year ago, I was constantly pushing to be allowed back on the bike. It didn't make much difference -- they were not going to let me back on until the bones had set -- but they certainly heard about it. #BikeNite

@ascentale@sfba.social @kimu@wandering.shop @bikenite@fedigroups.socialA1 #biken Nite Not Stuck but reveling in Central Illinois. (OK, I"m a bit tired.) 1b: communication matters!! The bike is a huge part of you *and* your health, physical and mental. A picture really is worth a thousand words and it being "weird" means there's more chance they pay attention.
