So I'm never going to ask the Fedi for money directly, but we are right out at the edge of our asses and it might soon be time to sell the house, which will only make the problems much worse. So here's a little #GetFediHired toot cause I ain't done that in a while, and I absolutely am available at rates that normal people can afford for small jobs - if I can hustle up 20 more hours/wk of work at my schoolbus wage, we will probably stay afloat until I find a real job again.
Mainly, I'm a Linux/Unix greybearded (hair remains stubbornly dark for some reason) wizard who can run for you a single or thousands of servers, using whatever stack you want. The only reason I don't have much in the way of public servers (ie. Fedi instances of my own) is that I literally doubt my ability to manage the money costs of even the tiniest server, under current circumstances. I don't stand up anything that can't disappear forever with nobody but me noticing. I have done this professionally though.
My main strength with systems, besides being willing to RTFM however boring, is that I can script every job away with great facility, so you might well have need of me and not even know it. Is there a thing you do every day that is the same steps every time, on a computer? I bet that if we sit and talk for a few minutes, I could figure out a way that a fairly quick Python script (again, my rates are very reasonable at the moment) could give you back hours of your life.
Side note: If any orgs that are funding Fediverse servers out there want specifically to sponsor a Fedi server for Manitoba's Interlake region, supporting Mastodon, Lemmy and probably PixelFed, I already have interlake.online ready to setup and would not take money for the hours spent managing it. Just, if I could have those hosting costs guaranteed by something other than my bad credit, servers is what I do with my time anyways, every day.
I can also teach you about Unix systems, help you internalize the concepts, etc - if you have been seeking a tutor for Linux/Unix servers, I am your guy. Identify your end goal ("I want to host all my own media and use Jellyfin," for instance) and I will walk you through the steps and concepts involved. In most cases, it will be pretty darn simple, probably, after you get comfortable with a few things.
That said, I specialize in the hopeless cases - I once was handed a guy who had risen through union ranks and never touched a computer and kinda refused to, until this new position, in which he absolutely had to, but was genuinely ignorant of everything, everything about them.
After three days with me, in which we drilled on the very very basics ("this is a mouse..."), he told me he was going out to buy himself a computer. I think it was realizing how useful google search... used to be.
I am not a hacker or security expert, not suitable for your colour teams or whatever. I know how to sanely secure a network and ensure data integrity, but as MWL puts it, nothing is secure, everything is horrible. We take our snapshots, do our backups, and be ready so when someone messes up, all I gotta do is restore the backups and everything is going again the same day. There's no beating them all the time everywhere, there's just being ready and solidly protected for the slipups.
Anyways, other than that I am musical and can knock off any non-gatekept music format you can provide a sample of. Like, if you want a song that hits more or less like your favorite metal track for your podcast theme, I can make a similar but original riff/orchestration, as long as the thing is comprehendable through "normal" music theory (meter, key, etc, are all stably defined is what I mean)). I'm sitting in my music studio's control room as I type, it doubles as my work from home office. Might be someone else's music studio soon I guess.
Can teach guitar and basics of some other instruments. No Music degree, just talent and years of doing it, see notes above on my teaching ability. I will keep you excited, doing the songs you want to learn.
And I'm not a bad rhetorician. If you need strong verbiage for any reason, show me the style you need and I can produce text for you.
Obviously most people will be using LLMs for that last one especially, but it absolutely is a talent of mine, as long as I fully understand what is desired. I can imitate most accents accurately if I listen to them for a while, but I can do that with text also.
I live in Manitoba, Canada, as you might have guessed, open to remote work in most places, subject to being able to verify your company actually exists. No AI used here, please respectfully do the same.
