In case you're seeing the news about an outbreak of the plague in Siberia on social media and having a bit of a panic because of the hysteria around it, I did some digging so you don't have to! ๐Ÿ™‚ The WHO reports about 1000-2000 cases of the plague worldwide each year, with ~200 deaths. Most cases occur in sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Here in Europe there's been no naturally occurring case of the plague for over a century. The half-dozen or so that crop up in the US each year usually aren't fatal, and the few that are tend to be people who've misdiagnosed themselves and then not received antibiotics in time. The Russian authorities have imposed a strict quarantine, and there's no reason to believe it's going to become a wider outbreak. This was an isolated accident under controlled lab conditions, and the one woman who tragically died was likely just very unlucky. You're welcome. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor.
