The usual suspects repeating the mother story is noise. A former friend saying "I figured " is testimony, because his closeness is what gives it weight. He cashed in the one thing only he had, his proximity to you, and spent it on standing with the clown's table. Look at the form too. "Sordid history" names nothing and commits to nothing, and he'd never have to defend it. It's an insinuation built to be deniable. The lack of courage isn't only in what he said, it's in how he said it. A man who believed it would have named something. A man pretending picks words he can walk back. What I'd keep from my earlier point is small. False witness is the one charge his own faith can't argue with.
