This is an unoriginal thought at this point but I will say it anyway: If the RAMpocalypse hadn't happened and Valve could have gotten the lower spec of the Steam Machine in at $700, the reviews for it would have been ecstatic https://www.engadget.com/2210832/valve-steam-machine-review/

@scalzi@mastodon.social The sad part about the Engadget article is if the steam machine at this price isn't worth it - no gaming PC is. Because the price on offering is basically their cost. The story is less "this PC is expensive", it's "all PCs are expensive now" - but they're pointing the finger at the wrong cause. What's most amusing is the flood of "I made my own steam machine" articles and videos, and when you do the math - if they're like-for-like, they're just as expensive. The reality is this: if you have the luxury of being able to afford a gaming PC in this market, the Steam Machine would be a reasonable value, if you could get one, but you can't. Unless you are already on the waiting list, you're looking at 6 months to a year, maybe more.

  • @scalzi@mastodon.social Don’t need a Steam Machine. Been playing games on Fedora for over a year now on a 6 year old AMD CPU and a 2 year old Nvidia card. I did pick up a Steam Controller on the 2nd round to replace my nearly 20 year old Xbox controller (the sticks were getting pretty sloppy.) The controller is really good. Fits my hands better. Very responsive and accurate (always a great combo.) Can recommend.
