Newly unsealed court documents from Authors Guild v. OpenAI reveal that both OpenAI and Microsoft executives knowingly trained their AI models on pirated books (including all sorts of art theft) while privately admitting that the technology threatens writers' livelihoods. Yet, OpenAI & Microsoft went ahead and released their shity AI on stolen work despite knowing it was illegal. https://authorsguild.org/news/ag-v-openai-top-execs-knew-mass-book-piracy-was-illegal/ Stealing from small guys & pocketing billions per year is how they get filthy rich.

    Remember Aaron Swartz and the tragic fate he suffered? Remember the kids who downloaded games or MP3 files, whose parents were threatened, and in some cases, extorted for money under copyright laws? Yes, where are those copyright laws now? Why are courts and governments now giving a free pass to filthy rich OpenAI, Microsoft, Google & Anthropic? I hate everything about this dual treatments. These AI companies even have audacity to tell others their AI output is copyrighted & others can't use it

  • @nixCraft@mastodon.social The hypocrisy of these AI companies conplaining about other AI companies 'stealing' their model's weights... It wasn't theirs to begin with;

  • @nixCraft@mastodon.social IANAL, but I think these executives either knew or got consultation about the differences between civil and criminal law. If they broke criminal law, they would risk going to jail, but if they broke civil law, they would only have to make it up later in financial penalties*. I think that's the key. * - and not even themselves, essentially OPM.
