Yeah, I get the impression that this is a clickbait "hey you know that thing that's kind of annoying/problematic/whatever? Well now AI can do it too!" Sort of news story.
AI didn't "reinvent" sending large amounts of unsolicited email. It was never deinvented in the first place.

404 media doesn’t really clickbait. But I assume this campaign or whatever is quite limited. If it sent an email to everyone their own service provider would probably immediately terminate services.
